Second-generation antihistamine and mast cell stabilizer
Mechanism of Action
Blocks H1 histamine receptors and stabilizes mast cells to prevent release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators.
Indications
- Allergic conjunctivitis
- Asthma prophylaxis (adjunct therapy)
- Chronic urticaria (off-label use in some countries)
Dose
- Oral (children ≥3 years and adults): 1 mg twice daily, may increase to 2 mg twice daily if needed.
- Eye drops (all ages): 0.025% solution, 1 drop in each eye 2–3 times daily.
Major Side Effects
- Drowsiness, fatigue
- Dry mouth
- Headache
- Gastrointestinal upset (nausea, abdominal pain)
- Rare: dizziness or allergic reactions
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ketotifen
- Severe hepatic impairment (oral formulations)

Oral tablets: water; eye drops: as supplied in sterile ophthalmic solution.
