Children 12–17 years: 25–50 mg orally once daily

Note: Adjust dose for elderly or patients sensitive to sedation. Maximum dose 50 mg/day for adults.
Route of Administration
Oral (tablet, chewable tablet, capsule)
Mechanism of Action
Meclizine blocks H1 histamine receptors in the vestibular system and CNS, reducing motion-induced vertigo, nausea, and vomiting. It also has mild anticholinergic effects.
Common Adverse Effects
Drowsiness / sedation
Dry mouth
Headache
Blurred vision
Gastrointestinal upset
Serious Adverse Effects
Severe allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling)
Confusion or hallucinations (rare, especially in elderly)
Extrapyramidal symptoms (very rare)
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to meclizine or other antihistamines
Use with caution in patients with glaucoma or urinary retention due to anticholinergic effects
Precautions
May cause drowsiness; avoid driving or operating machinery
Use caution in elderly or patients with hepatic impairment
Alcohol and CNS depressants may increase sedation
Drug Interactions
Alcohol and sedatives – additive CNS depression
Other anticholinergic drugs – additive side effects
Caution with MAO inhibitors (enhanced anticholinergic effects)
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use only if clearly needed; safety not fully established. Small amounts may be excreted in breast milk.
Patient Counseling
Take 1 hour before travel for motion sickness prevention
Do not exceed recommended dose
Avoid driving or activities requiring alertness if drowsy
